Dear People of Denmark, the normal folk on the street, Men, Women, and Children:

Peace be upon those whom truly seek guidance,

Allow me first to introduce myself: I am but a common man on the Arab Muslim street. Neither am I a clergy man nor am I a scholar; nor would I under any normal circumstances have any business trying to communicate with you, if it wasn’t in response to the call of a blessed man, a preacher whom is greatly respected and held in high regard in our region of the world, Mr. Amr Khaled, whom in a televised speech addressed the importance of not merely protesting angrily in response to the sad events which have taken place in your country, but on the contrary, we must try to reach out to you, The Danish Public, in an attempt to explain to you why is that we were so greatly offended by the cartoons that were posted in your best selling newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

O People of Denmark:

Let it be known that we respect your freedom of speech, and we as Muslims have the least desire to control it; Personally I believe that it is every person’s right to say what they want when they want about what they want to. But in hindsight, it is also recognized universally that no freedoms are absolute; One’s freedom ends where that of another’s begins. If I were to give a simple example of that _one well known to you in Europe for that matter_ I would say for instance that it is your right to smoke a cigarette _noting that your are well aware of the medical hazards you are being exposed to_ however, once in presence of a nonsmoker you must immediately turn out your cigarette and cease to smoke for as it is your right to smoke, it is more the right of others to inhale fresh air. Such is the case with all known freedoms, leading thus to this very misfortunate affair. Freedom of speech in the West has always kept within that fine red line of ‘political correctness’, careful not to tread over it offending the feelings and beliefs of people from other faiths and ethnic backgrounds…even animals’ rights have been protected within your laws that we used to look up to as an ideal for all of the World, so what happened this time?

O People of Denmark:

Are you alarmed at the scale of the reaction to a number of ‘harmless’ cartoons posted in a local newspaper? Are you surprised at the angry demonstrations that have filled the streets of the world in protest to what has happened? Does the sight of your flag being burned by frenzied mobs at the doors of your embassies throughout the world frighten you? Are you aware of what mounting effects a Universal boycott of any products bearing your logo or sign by the Arab and Muslim World could have on your economy and then wondered what has called for this? Assuming that your answer to all these questions is ‘yes’, then allow me to ask you once again: Do you know who The Prophet Mohammed is in first place since merely targeting his person in such a manner has incited all this anger and rage throughout the Muslim world?

I don’t claim to be a preacher, yet again I am a believer, and what you in Denmark perhaps are unaware of is what Prophet Mohammed represents to us Muslims (we always follow his mention with the words ‘May God’s Peace and Blessings Be upon Him’). The Prophet (May God’s Peace and Blessings Be upon Him) is dearer to our hearts than our mothers and our fathers and our children and our very selves. One needn’t more but ask any common mainstream Muslim to see evidence of this claim. This notion is shared by one billion and two hundred million Muslims spread wide throughout the world. When slandering Prophet Mohammed (May God’s Peace and Blessings Be upon Him) your are in fact offending the feelings and beliefs of those one billion and two hundred million Muslims.

I truly believe that had you in Denmark been aware of whom The Prophet (May God’s Peace and Blessings Be upon Him) was, that perhaps you too would have been as offended as we are. He was the ‘Honest one’ who has never in his life told a lie, he was the ‘Trustworthy one’ who never in his life has broke his word. He was the most noble of men, the most generous, the most the merciful, and the most forgiving. Never has he avenged himself from his enemies, even when he was capable of doing so, and had them at the blade of his victorious army’s swords, yet granted them a general amnesty. Never has he sought the wealths of this World or anything for himself as his only concern was his message and the wellbeing his followers. Those who have met him admit to never have meeting before or after him anyone quite like him. God (referred to in Arabic as ‘Allah’) has told us in his book that Mohammed was sent as ‘mercy to mankind’. Believe in him or not, but if you have any knowledge of history you cannot deny that he was a landmark in Human history, and that the face of The World after his message has changed forever. He ranked 1st in Michael Hart’s list of the 100 most Influential men in history, ahead of Isaac Newton, Jesus Christ, Buddha, and Confucius. In regard to him says Sir George Bernard Shaw “I have always held the religion of Muhammad in high estimation because of its wonderful vitality. It is the only religion which appears to me to possess that assimilating capacity to the changing phase of existence which can make itself appeal to every age. I have studied him - the wonderful man and in my opinion for from being an anti-Christ, he must be called the Savior of Humanity." Believe me I could go on, but there is no need, one only needs to point to the masses of angered people swarming the streets of the world in response to his slanderous depiction, why would all these millions be offended today, more than fourteen hundred years of his passing away, hadn’t what I said been true?

O People of Denmark:

Had The Prophet (May God’s Peace and Blessings Be upon Him) been alive and amongst us today, I believe he would’ve ignored this whole matter gracefully, as it isn’t the first time he has been ridiculed or slandered in his life, yet it has never effected his status, very much to the contrary. In hindsight this whole matter may ultimately be a blessing as it was an opportunity for us Muslims to express our solitude with our Prophet Peace be upon him. The anger you see in the streets, although I personally don’t agree with some of it’s aspects such as burning flags and damaging public property, however I do urge you please to understand where all this is stemming from and realize that this comes as a straw that broke the camel’s back, after long surmounting continuous offenses to Islam and Muslims.

In closing, please let us not give those extremists on either side an opportunity to hijack these events and steer them in the direction of a ‘clash of civilizations’ or the such. There was never any sentiment in the Muslim street towards Denmark as a people or as a state; we have always known you for the quality of your dairy products and your football team.
I truly wish that we all reach a common understating to respect one another’s beliefs, and to guarantee that such offenses are not repeated in the future.

Yours truly,

A Muslim greatly offended by the cartoons posted in Jyllands-Posten.

اسف على الاطاله
